Sturt is an uncommon family surname, which may be derived from the Saxon
words for "hill-dweller". The surname almost certainly originated in the
South-East of England, where even today its occurrence is highest.
At some time in the past, there must have been a significant migration to
Southern Australia and the Eastern United States. And it was in Australia
that the most famous bearer of the surname, Charles Sturt, made his mark
as an explorer, giving his name to Sturt's Desert Pea, Sturt's Desert Rose,
Charles Sturt University, Sturt's Desert, Sturt Creek and other places.
As there are only some 700 families in the world bearing the surname Sturt,
and probably as many again with a member whose maiden surname is Sturt,
I thought it would be an interesting challenge to see whether we could piece
together the whole Sturt family tree. Please assist me and our descendants
